Overview

San Jacinto College designed the Barber Conversion program (15 college credits/320 hours) to provide technical and practical instruction covering the art of barbering to include shaving, clipper cutting, men’s grooming, and men’s facials. Students seeking the Class A barber conversion license are required to have a valid cosmetology license before entering the Barber Conversion curriculum. The educational goal of the barbering course of study is to prepare for state licensing examination and for profitable employment as a Class A barber. Students who successfully complete the Barber Conversion curriculum are qualified to sit for the examination given by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Information

Helping others look and feel their best is one of the most rewarding career pathways. The Barber Conversion program at San Jacinto College can offer students the opportunity to enter the barber industry. Our program gives students the training they need to become licensed by the state of Texas as Class A barbers. A licensed cosmetologist may pursue a Class A Barber license with only 300 additional hours in barbering education and passing the barber written and practical exams. A look around the city will show that numerous opportunities exist to join the barber industry. Students could work anywhere from barber shops to dual barber/cosmetology salons and spas, or can follow their dream to open their own business.

The San Jacinto College Barber Conversion program:

  • Is designed to prepare students (with a current cosmetologist license) with the technical skills and theoretical knowledge required for an entry-level position in the barber profession;
  • Offers students the opportunity to complete the 300 hours of required training to be eligible to take the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Class A barber examination; and
  • Prepares students to be barber stylists to include shaving, men’s grooming, styling, and more.

Admission

Prior to entering the Barber Conversion program, students must hold a valid Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation cosmetology license. In accordance with Texas House Bill 1508, the College informs all students in this program who may have a criminal background that a criminal history could keep graduates from being licensed by the state of Texas. Students with any questions about their background and licensure may speak with the Department Chair.
