The San Jacinto College Cosmetology Operator program readies you for a dynamic and creative career in cosmetology. You will master essential skills—from hair design, color, cutting, and styling to skin care, nails, lash extensions, and more—while developing knowledge of safety, sanitation, and client care. This intensive 1,000-hour training program meets the requirements to sit for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Cosmetology Operator exam. Graduates are well prepared for entry-level roles in salons, spas, or to launch their own business.

Job Entry Requirements. In accordance with Texas House Bill 1508 amendments to Texas Occupations Code Sec 53.152, the College informs all students in this program who may have a criminal background that a criminal history could keep graduates from being licensed by the state of Texas. Students with any questions about their background and licensure may speak with the program’s department chair.

- Cosmetology Operator, Certificate of Technology (6 months)
- Cosmetology Operator, Associate of Applied Science (2 years)
Learning Outcomes and Career Skills
A student completing the last award in the pathway will be able to:
- Demonstrate and apply TDLR and industry mandated safety and sanitation procedures for employment.
- Analyze, design, blueprint, and execute to produce various industry haircutting and styling techniques.
- Analyze technical procedures and construct to specifications, such as hair color, manicures, pedicures, services related to esthetics, or other client services in a timely manner.
- Prepare and practice the skills necessary for the state written and practical exam for entry into the workplace.
- Implement salon management skills and exhibit professional behavior in a salon environment, including teamwork, as it relates to the salon industry.
- Perform chemical texturizing services following industry standards.
Licensure or Certification
The Cosmetology Operator Certificate of Technology is a course of study designed to meet the needs of those students who desire to enter the beauty industry in a minimum amount of time. The program will provide the student with the technical background and experience necessary to develop the skills and theoretical knowledge required to pass the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations Examination for licensing and to gain entry-level employment in professional salons. Full-time students can earn the Certificate of Technology in one year. All key aspects of the cosmetology profession are addressed.
