Each college and university has its own policy for credit earned by examination, and any such credit allowed by one institution may not necessarily be accepted at another. The following policies are in effect at San Jacinto College:
- A student must have earned at least one semester credit hour (SCH) of course work at San Jacinto College before the College will post credit for College Level Evaluation Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or internal examinations to the student’s transcript;
- CPL is only awarded when it applies to available College courses or an approved program of study. Students pursuing any CPL may receive credit for up to 75% of certificate or associate degree coursework. At least 25% of an award must be from instruction at San Jacinto College, excluding CPL (SACSCOC 3.5.2);
- Credit will be awarded based on the College catalog in effect at the time the student took the test;
- CPL may not be awarded if the student has previously taken or attempted the course. Student withdrawals after the census day result in a “W” posted on the transcript, making the course ineligible for CPL. Students withdrawing from courses prior to the census day may seek CPL;
- Grades and SCH are assigned to credit earned by internal examinations; a minimum grade of C is required to earn credit. Term hours only are assigned to credit earned by CLEP, AP, and IB examinations; and
- The College does not give residence credit for CLEP, AP, IB, or internal examinations, and does not include credit for these exams in GPA calculations.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
San Jacinto College awards college credit for certain CLEP tests. Students should submit official scores to the Student Records Management Office. Once received, students must meet with a program advisor to request the credit to be posted to their record.
The College will award the credit indicated in the chart below to students taking one of the following CLEP exams and scoring 50 or better. For language exams, students must score 59 or better to receive credit for FREN 2311 Intermediate French I/FREN 2312 Intermediate French II courses and must score 60 or better to receive credit for GERM 2311 Intermediate German I/GERM 2312 Intermediate German II courses. Additionally, students must score 63 or better to receive credit for SPAN 2311 Intermediate Spanish I and SPAN 2312 Intermediate Spanish II.
San Jacinto College Central campus, North campus, and South campus have been designated as testing centers for CLEP examinations. Complete information about the CLEP program and credit by examination policies for San Jacinto College is available from the testing centers on these three campuses.
Advanced Placement Program (AP)
San Jacinto College awards college credit for certain Advanced Placement (AP) program tests. Students should submit official scores to the Student Records Management Office. Once received, students must meet with a program advisor to request the credit to be posted to their record.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination Credit
San Jacinto College awards college credit for students who have completed IB examinations with a score of 4 or above. In compliance with Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) regulations, the College awards 24 SCH or equivalent course credit in appropriate subject areas to those students who have completed the IB diploma program and who have achieved at least the minimum required score on each examination administered as part of the diploma program.
Students should submit official scores to the Student Records Management Office. Once received, students must meet with a program advisor to request the credit to be posted to their record.
Credit by Internal Exams
NOTE: Departmental Challenge examinations are currently under review. Students may contact the discipline’s Department Chair or Program Director to inquire about course availability. These inquiries will be handled on a case-by-case basis until the review is complete.
CPL by Licensure or Industry Certification
San Jacinto College has established equivalent course credit for professional certificates and state or national licensure. The College bases course credit on competencies demonstrated through successful completion of the professional certification, or Texas state or national licensure examinations. Students must provide evidence of an official, current Texas or national licensure or professional certificate to receive credit. Credit by licensure does not apply to academic courses. A student must request to have the credit posted. The credit will not count as part of the residency requirement. To receive credit, students must:
- Provide evidence of successfully passing the professional certification exam and proof of current or active state of Texas licensure to the academic department responsible for the course;
- Verify licensure or certification provided has been approved for credit by the College Curriculum Steering Committee; and
- Provide an official copy of licensure or certification to the academic department.
