Lead Care. Manage Compassion.
Our Advanced Technical Certificate in Long Term Care Administration prepares experienced professionals to oversee the operations of nursing homes, assisted living, retirement communities, and other residential care settings. Students develop leadership, business, regulatory, and financial management skills critical for long-term care. Completion of coursework plus a 1,000-hour administrator-in-training internship enables eligibility for the Texas licensing exam administered by the Department of Aging and Disability Services.

Learning & Career Pathway
The Long Term Care Administration, Advanced Technical Certificate is intended to provide students with all skills needed to enter the workforce. At this time, this award is what employers value and hire for job entry, so the College does not currently have other certificates or degrees related to this learning pathway.
Learning Outcomes and Career Skills
A student completing this certificate will be able to:
- Communicate with potential residents about facility services and admission requirements.
- Abide by laws and regulations governing nursing facilities.
- Address safety issues including legal risk management and residents’ rights.
- Utilize financial decision-making techniques and strategies.
- Perform in an administrative and/or managerial role.
- Complete state (Texas) required forms for nursing facilities.
Licensure or Certification
The Long Term Care Administration program includes the required coursework and internship hours to apply to take the licensing exam required by the state of Texas. In addition to the state licensing exam, Texas also requires that applicants successfully complete a national exam for licensure.
External Learning Experiences
This program includes external learning experiences outside of the classroom, e.g., an internship, externship, clinical, practicum, or cooperative learning experience. Those experiences are typically on-site at a business or organization.
All students participating in external learning experiences are required to comply with the immunization requirements and policies of the external learning sites. Some learning sites outside the college have their own vaccination requirements. These rules come from those facilities and are not mandated by the college. Failure to meet those immunization requirements may limit a student’s ability to complete the program and/or may delay the student’s graduation date. San Jacinto College does not process exemptions, and students should address potential vaccination exemptions directly with the external learning site.
